form studio ac +
founded by a vision. a vision to unite architecture and construction into a packaged service that engages with clients and community rather than imposing thereon. the landscape of the built environment seeks rejuvenation through sustainable solutions which benefits more than a one party at the top. we at form studio seek to think, design and develop these solutions which grow our communities sustainably.
[ 1.a ] people + (great) architecture & construction
at form studio, we are about people. our fellow people of south africa, to be more specific. we envision a future of new design and construction philosophies, forming new moulds, and creating sustainable opportunities for our people and communities. africa needs uniquely african solutions, we live different, we think different and we ought to design and build different.
critical regionalism in architecture and built environment asks the question; what is the regional, rather than global solution is for a specific project, site or context may be? What behavior, lifestyle, vernacular and material availability informs this specific project?
[ 1.b ] critical regionalism is an approach to architecture that strives to counter the "placelessness" and lack of identity of the International Style, but also rejects the whimsical individualism and ornamentation of Postmodern architecture.

our first foundational principle of critical regionalism guides us in our design philosophy, our construction methods and our desired outcomes for our projects. whilst innovation and development is ever present and continuously occuring globally, we recognise that the global innovation can be regionalised and adapted to suit out local needs. how can the latest innovations be applied with local sustainable methods to create meaningful contextual architecture in africa?
[ 2.a ] the idea
we are thinkers, innovators, makers & community members. we don't take those titles lightly.
that leaves us asking the question; how can we create sustainable solutions which can be tailored to the diverse markets in our communities? by growing, continiously. whilst we focus on internal growth, we equally seek partnerships with various sectors within our community for external growth, community engagement and skill-sharing opportunities. we aim to learn from others and teach equally ensuring mutually beneficial engagement. these partnerships aim to encorporate circular economy principles as a key component in our sustainable approach to the way we approach the built environment.
[ 2.b ] circular economy (ce), also referred to as circularity, is a model of resource production and consumption that involves sharing, leasing, reusing, repairing, refurbishing, and recycling materials and products, to extend product life cycle for as long as possible. the concept aims to tackle global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution by emphasizing the design-based implementation of the three base principles of the model.

"by enabling others, we enable ourselves". this is our second foundational principle. this comes together in our company structure - form studio is built on three key functional legs:
[ 3.a ] our goal
as a team of community members, our access to skills & resources are vast and diverse, this gives us a unique opportunity to create in a way which has a lasting impact on communities and landscapes wherein we work.
our goal is for south africa as a whole to have access to great architecture & design, and through innovative construction techniques, the use sustainable materials local to africa and design principles which allow communities to participate in the process we aim to allow the community to take ownership and directly build their communities as participants rather than onlookers.
